Stay Tuned
For The Greatest Spectacle In Racing
By Ron Dorson

This is not one
of the most well known books in the annals of auto
racing, but it certainly ranks very high as one of
the best written. Author Ron Dorson proved to be one
of those Comets that come to automobile racing every
now and then. He churned out some very memorable work
and then vanished back into the civilian life.
“Stay Tuned” tells us the life story of
Sid Collins, know world-wide for the better part of
three decades as the Voice of The Indianapolis 500.
Sid is the man who coined the term describing the
world’s largest single day sporting event, that
is also the title of this book.
Sid Collins was a perfectionist with a captivating
broadcast style. The sport of automobile racing was
lucky to have him as noted sportswriter Jim Murray
comments in this biography.
Sid Collins was 28 years old when he was given the
chance to anchor the Indianapolis 500 broadcast in
1951. He continued in that capacity through the 1976
event and died a few weeks before the 1977 event was
run. Consequently he lived through the fabulous Roadster
era and was there for us to describe the rear engine
revolution
This book is a very accurate and most honest account
of Sid Collins’ life and personality. It is
not a sugar-coated tribute to a man who was often
known as acrimonious. During his era Collins was a
star broadcaster who did his homework for each “500”.
Author Dorson was emotionally involved with the Indy
500 for decades and brought a personal commitment
to the production of this story. We certainly wish
he had done more auto racing oriented work.
As of Feb. 2006 I believe we have about 40 copies
of this book available and must apologize there are
no dust jackets available.
